Dog Collar vs Dog Harness: Which is right for your dog?

As dog owners (or potential dog owners), we understand that dog walking, regular exorcise, and training are vital parts of our daily life, along with being essential for a happy, healthy dog. So, making sure they have a collar or harness that is well fitting, secure and comfortable is a must. But have you ever been asking yourself the question if one is better than the other?

Collars have been the go to for most dog owners for a long time - they are cheap and easy way to control your dog when out and about, along with having a scure place to hang that ID tag. Lets be honest, we all love to tell people what cute names we called our dogs!

However more recently, most dogs in the park can be seen wearing harnesses.
so, which is best?

The Collar vs. Harness Debate: Weighing the Pros and Cons

The key distinction lies in their design. collars simply fasten around the neck, typically with a buckle, while harnesses provide a bit more support over a wider area of the dogs body, encompassing the chest, shoulders, and back. Both options offer adjustability for a secure and comfortable fit, and nowadays, they come in an array of colors and styles to match your dogs unique personality. So, if you're one to switch up your pet's look (who isn't???), there's a myriad of colours and styles available.

Dog Collars

Collar Pros:

  • Cost - typical, dog collars are much cheaper than a harness, meaning you can have multiple at a low cost.
  • Convenience - Collars are small, simple in design, and can be worn around the house.
  • Secure attachment D-ring - Securely clip on your lead when it comes to walkies. Also provides a secure place to attach your ID tags, or any other accessories.
  • Lots of styles to mix up the look - match your dogs breed, personality, or just the season. with plenty of styles to choose from, you can always find the perfect dog collar to match your dog.

Collar Cons:

  • Risk of slipping out - especially if improperly fitted or if your dogs neck is similar in size to its head.
  • Not ideal for dogs prone to pulling - as it can cause injury and hinder airflow.
  • Can exert pressure on the dog's trachea - posing a risk for certain medical conditions. Always check with your vet if your dog suffers from glaucoma, eye proptosis, neck injuries or spinal malformations.

Dog Harnesses

Harness Pros:

  • Distributes pressure across a larger area - reducing strain on the neck and trachea. ensuring a good fit can also help with reducing back pain.
  • Puppy Training - great for pups who are learning to walk with more comfort and control when leash training.
  • Offers enhanced security - harness have multiple straps and general fasten around the dogs body minimizing the risk of escape.
  • Available in a range of sizes and styles - from over the head adjustable dog harnesses, to no pull dog harnesses, along with other designs available. Adjustable harnesses are affordable, and perfect for dogs who are good on the lead and love to show off their personality with cute and colourful designs. No Pull Harnesses, have a front and back D-ring for the lead attachment, with the front D-ring being a great solution if your dog likes to pull. When the dog pulls from the front lead attachment, it forces the dog to turn its body and slow them down. This is also great for larger dogs, as the front and back D-rings can be used for double ended leads for better control

Harness Cons:

  • Less convenient than collars - may require time for dogs to acclimate to a harness if they are not used to wearing them. They also shouldnt be worn around the house, meaning you will need to put on and take off when its walkies time. If you have a dog that does not like things going over their heads, some harnesses might not be ideal, ensure you get a harness with neck clip to avoid this.
  • Bulkier design may be uncomfortable initially - and improper fitting can cause issues. ensure that the harness is the correct fit and are adjusted acordingly.

Different Types of Harnesses and Their Uses

  • Back Clip Harnesses (adjustable Harnesses): Suitable for well-trained dogs, featuring a D-ring along the back, and available in many styles and designs
  • Front Clip tactical Harnesses (No-pull Harnesses): Ideal for dogs prone to pulling, redirecting their movement. Most no pull harnesses have both a front and back D-ring so you can choose what is best for your dog, and also means that stronger dogs can use double ended leads for more control.

  • Toy Poodles
  • Havanese
  • Maltese
  • Boston Terriers
  • Pugs

How Can the Right Walking Aid Benefit Your Dog's Health?

Choosing the appropriate walking aid can prevent injuries and alleviate strain on sensitive areas, ensuring your dog's well-being and making walks enjoyable for both of you. Consulting with your vet can provide tailored advice based on your dog's specific health needs. We all want our dogs to lead happy and health lives, so take some time to consider the best options.

How do Collars and Harnesses differ for training?

Both harnesses and collars have their roles in training. While collars are essential for identification, harnesses can be valuable for leash training, especially for energetic pups. Positive reinforcement techniques, coupled with the right gear, can foster good walking habits in your furry companion. If you are wanting to walk your dong in a harness, its best to get them used to it early on as a puppy.

What do you think? Are you a collar or harness lover?
